Raw Food Experiment – Day 2 Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Day 2 and feeling a little better than yesterday even.

Started out the day with…
Raw cranberry granola
1 Banana

The granola was really filling. It does have a different taste than traditional granola. But not in a bad way. It’s actually really tasty. Here’s the brand I got.

Before I knew it, it was time to go meet my friend Brian, for lunch at McAlister’s Deli. My first foray into eating out (Beets doesn’t really count as eating out, b/c they cater to raw foodists). Tricky, indeed. I looked at the menu and instantly saw…nothing. So I had to make some modifications (just left some stuff off one of their salads).

That salad at lunch was pretty huge, so it filled me up well.

Afternoon snack
1 cup Baby Carrots

I waited WAYYYYY too long to start “cooking” (yar yar) dinner, as per usual. I decided to actually try my hand at some actual raw recipes. Here’s what I had:

Lemony Herb Fredo Style Raw Noodles
1 cup Raspberries
1 cup Strawberries
2 cups Almond Milk
3 Bananas

The recipe was DEEEEELISH. Really tasty. Next time I make it, I will probably put about half as many herbs as they recommend, just to see what that tastes like, but it wasn’t unbearable. Just a little “spicy”. The zucchini as “noodles” was really pretty darn good. I could easily eat this one again.

I have found my new love in the raw vegan arena. ALMOND MILK. OOOOOOOOOOO MMMMMMMMM GGGGGGGGGG!!!!! This stuff is absolutely DIVINE. I LOVE it. So much better than soy milk, without having to worry about having too much soy in the ol’ diet. It is delicious. I got the plain, original one here. I want to try their unsweetened vanilla one too. But the original is SOOO good. If nothing else comes out of this raw food experiment, I have DEFINITELY found my new milk substitute.

Raw Food Experiment – Day 1 Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Today I started a one week trial of a raw vegan food diet. I’ve been wanting to try out a raw vegan diet for a while now and the timing was just kinda right. So, what the heck?
Unfortunately, I didn’t do much to prepare for this. I just decided this morning that it was time.
So after a 1/3 mile run in my VFFs (I’m trying to build barefoot distance up without injuring my calves again), I started the day with…

Green Smoothie
– 2 small bananas
– 1 peach
– 1 cup of strawberries
– 1.5-2 cups of baby spinach
1 small banana

I got pretty busy with work and didn’t have any of the food to actually eat, so I went out grocery shopping for lunch. And while I was out I ate..

1 large banana
1 HUGOMONGOUS Honeycrisp apple (this thing was the size of 3 normal apples!)
2.5 cups baby carrots

I did get pretty hungry in the afternoon and was still busy busy busy with work. I wanted to see what can be done with raw foods. So I went with my buddy Chris to Beets Cafe. I had a “Green On Me” juice, and some AMAZING portabella fajita salad. All raw. The portabellas were “cooked” with vinegar, and the dish came with hummus, guacamole, and salsa, with some zucchini, onions, and maybe some bell peppers. It was DEEEEEELICIOUS. I would get it again in a heartbeat. It also came with a small sprouted lentil salad and the folks at the restaurant also gave us a sample of a sprouted lentil chili that they are going to try out tomorrow. Good stuff!

We then made the trek to Wheatsville Coop so that I could get a few last items for my grocery list for the next few days. Specifically, I wanted raw tahini (as opposed to your usual tahini, which is made with toasted sesame seeds). I got the tahini, after not finding it on the shelf, asking about it while checking out, and being told they had it FRESH in bulk. So I bought a small tub of tahini, a VERY small dollop of raw cashew butter, a jar of raw almond butter, and some raw granola bars.

I’m not gonna lie. For a lot of the day I have been JONESIN for something crunchy like tortilla chips. Not sure why that is, you’d think that would be driven by your body’s need for carbs. But I’m eating all fruits and veggies, so it’s nothing but carbs! Interesting. Now that I have some groceries, I feel a little bit better about this experiment. I gotta say that being able to eat guacamole still is a godsend!! I LOVE me some guacamole. I’ll have to watch my fat intake a bit with all of these butters and avocados… but it should be fine.

When I went to the grocery store today, I literally only went to the produce section and then left. Pretty funny. I bought a TON of stuff:
Mandarin Oranges, Baby Spinach, Lettuce Mixes, Grapes, Celery, Mangos, Strawberries, Raspberries, Shredded Cabbage, Baby Carrots, Apples, Cucumbers, Avocados, Tomatoes.

In case it seems like it might be hard to get a proper daily intake of calories and protein… here’s how I fared today:

Calories: 1511
Fat: 18g
Carbs: 321g
Fiber: 58g
Protein: 42g

Oh and I guess I’ll post weight and stats on here starting tomorrow. I like to do that first thing in the morning, not at the end of the day.

No too shabby. I think I can improve on that by eating more meals too. Like I said, today was busy, and I wasn’t prepared.
